History
August 1930 To Fleetwood as a new vessel.
May 11 1931 wrecked North Mull, north of Portencorkre on a voyage to St. Kilda.
NotesReturning home from the St Kilda fishing grounds to her home port of Fleetwood, DAILY MAIL ran into thick fog off the Galloway coast on the night of 11th of May 1931. The 386 ton vessel, owned by Boston Deep Sea Fishing & Ice Co, was only one year old and under the command of Albert Heywood.
Without any warning whatsoever the vessel struck a rock to the north of Portencorkrie and opened up her port side from bow to bridge. An SOS was sent and all the crew abandoned the trawler to be picked up by the trawler TRANQUIL which had responded to the distress call as had the Portpatrick lifeboat.
As they tide made the following morning DAILY MAIL refloated herself and drifted into the bay and stranded broadside onto the shore where she settled. All attempts to refloat her failed and her owners began dismantling her in August 1931. Her boiler was a new design so the salvors removed it and tried to tow it away but it sank in deep water. Wreckage can still be seen on the rocks.
