Fishing, Politics and Bits & Bobs

Fishing Related Articles

I could never be accused of political bias. I detest all politicians equally. It is politics that have reduced the fishing industry to the pale shadow of its former self that we see today. The links on this page will take you to a series of articles that are relevant to fishing and the politics that are destroying the industry. There are also aticles of general nautical interest.

Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone.................

Joni Mitchell...... "Big Yellow Taxi"

It's a sobering thought. I'm informed by Wilf Cartmel, the man heavily involved in the fight for compensation for fishermen, that there are less that 300 of the Fleetwood fishermen left alive.

Happy reading.

A coincidence.

A poem from Charlie Gregory. Those who remember the loss of Michael Griffiths, Red Falcon, Hildina and many more Fleetwood vessels will also remember the impact that such losses have on the relatives and loved ones ashore. Even if you are not of a poetic turn of mind, read this short poem from Charlie. It sums up precisely the sense of loss and the grief felt by those who don't even have the release of burying those that they have lost.

Sailing With Hunters. An excellent first hand account of Arctic trips by Charlie Gregory.

Charlie sailed as "Sparks" on Carthusian and Milyna.

The story is well written and with a touch of humour. It tells it like it was. Not to be missed.

Trawlers as anti-submarine vessels

Trawlers have played their part in two world wars and the Falkland conflict. One of the many tasks that they undertook was the unenviable one of sweeping for mines. The Canadian trawler Liscombe was one of those. I have no idea who wrote this article but, if they contact me, I will gladly credit them with it.
